Dear Chipola Nation,
On behalf of our entire athletic department, I would like to thank you for considering supporting Chipol Athletics. It is an honor to represent such a nationally-known program and I am excited for another year.
The 2016-17 athletic season was another great one! Chipola baseball brought home its 2nd National Championship along with State and Conference Championships. They also had 11 players drafted in the MLB draft, tying with major Division I schools for the most players drafted. Softball finished runner-up at the FCSAA State Tournament and made another trip to the national tournament where they represented Chipola well. The women’s basketball team had a great year and made another appearance in the NJCAA National Tournament and the men’s basketball program had a 22-8 season. The Chipola women’s cross country program hosted it’s first-ever cross country event in Marianna and our cheerleading squad spent another year bringing school spirit to athletic events and around the community.
Academically, it was another great year as many of the student-athletes received national and state accolades for their achievements in the classroom. At the top of those achievements, cross country runner Jayde Smelcer was named Coca-Cola Academic Team Gold Scholar and a member of the All-Florida Academic Team. Our student-athletes achieved an 83% graduation rate, which is much higher than the normal rate.
It was also an exciting year for many of our coaches. Our baseball staff was named national, state, and conference Coaches of the Year and women’s basketball coach Greg Franklin crossed the 300 win mark. The softball coaching staff was named Panhandle Conference Coaching staff of the year.
As always, our alumni have represented us well in all areas of athletics. Many are excelling at their Division I schools, professional teams, and other areas of life. In addition to the 11 baseball players drafted, Chipola women’s basketball alum Evelyn Akhator was drafted #3 overall in the WNBA draft. With each one of these achievements, we are reminded how important our support of our athletic programs really is.
As we switch gears, we are excited for the upcoming athletic season. Some of the top prospects in the country are currently on our campus and we can’t wait to see what they accomplish while here.
I hope you will join us in our efforts to maintain one of the best college athletic programs in the country. Your membership in this organization is more important than ever and we greatly appreciate each contribution.
