Chipola Wins Opener, Tops SCF 6-4


Ft. Myers, FL - A superb effort by Andrew Bechtold (RS-SO / Chadds Ford, PA) lead the Chipola Indians (1-0) to a 6-4 win over State College of Florida - Manatee Friday night. Bechtold blasted 2 homeruns while going 2-3 with 3 RBIs and 3 runs scored. He also walked twice. His solo shot in the thrid got the Indians on the board, and his second homer in the sixth proved to be the game-winner.

Junior Harding (RS-SO / Cambridge, MD) got the start for the Indians. SCF - Manatee put up 3 runs in the bottom of the first. Harding went 2 innings striking out 2.

The bullpen kept Chipola Chipola in the game. Robbie Knox (SO / Woodstock, GA) came in relief for Harding. He slowed down the SCF hitters. Going 2.1 innings, striking out 2, while surrendering 3 hits.

The Indians tied the game up in the 5th, scoring 3 runs off to make the score 4-4. Jose Caballero (SO / Panama City, Panama) lead-off with a walk. He was thrown out stealing. Edmond Americaan (FR / Willemstad, Curacao) followed with a 1-out walk. Bechtold and Rivera then walked to load the bases. Americaan then scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-2. Max Guzman (FR / Miami, FL) then walked. With the bases loaded, Brody Wofford (SO / Rome, GA) delivered a 1-out 2 RBI single to tie it at 4.

With 1 out in the 5th, Ryan Shauger (1-0) (SO / Virginia Beach, VA) came in relief with the game tied at 4. He shut the door on the SCF offense. Shauger went 2.2 hitless innings while striking out 2 and walking 1.

In the sixth, after two quick outs, Americaan roped a double down the left field line. Bechtold then followed Americaan with a 2-run homer over the right field fence, just sneaking it inside the foul pole.

Riley Cabral (SO / Oklahoma City, OK) got the two-inning save (1) for the Indians. He came in relief for Shauger in the 8th, getting a quick 5-4-3 double play and a 6-3 groundout to stymie a lead-off walk. After a single to start the ninth, Cabral shut the door on SCF getting a 6-3 groundout and 2 strikeouts to end it.

The Indians are in action again tomorrow, Saturday - January 28 at 10am CST / 11am EST versus Florida SouthWestern.
