On July 13, 2010, Chipola fans will be able to watch one of their own participate in the 2010 MLB All-Star Game.
Former Chipola Indian, Jose Bautista, was selected by his fellow players to participate in this year’s All-Star game. After leading the Major League Baseball in homeruns throughout the first two months of the season, former Chipola Indian Jose Bautista hit only four in all of June – and two came on the same night against the Yankees.
Still, as a former utility man, his versatility is seen as an asset in the late innings for the Toronto Blue Jays. Bautista recently reclaimed the major league home run lead with a two-run homer on Saturday. His fire power was noticed by his fellow players as they casted their ballots for the 2010 MLB All-Star game.
Bautista, who is batting .229 with 21 homeruns and 52 RBIs, was selected to this first MLB All-Star team and will represent the Blue Jays on the American League squad.
Bautista was a member of the Chipola Baseball squad before being drafted by the Pittsburg Pirates in the 20th round of the 2000 amateur draft. His official signing came in May 2001, the same year the Indians captured the Panhandle Conference Championship and was the NJCAA Region VIII Runner-Up.
