Chipola softball wins 3 games on Saturday to put them into semifinals of the Aiken Mizuno Invitational in Aiken SC.  The Lady Indians came to the tournament to play a guarantee of five games, but picked up 2 extra.  The host team had to cancel because of team injuries, so Chipola stepped up and played Aikens games to help the tourney run smoothly.    With the extra games Chipola had to play 3 games in a row on Friday and Saturday. All the other teams played a maximum of 4 games in 2 days while Chipola played 6.   In game one on Saturday, the Lady Indians played Gordon College.  Chipola started the bottom of the first with back to back singles by Michelle Hewett(Marianna) and Dana Cauthen(Ocala).  After a double steal and a strikeout, Hewett scored on a sacrifice fly to right field by Trish Bliss(Lafayette).  Cauthen advanced to third on the throw and later scored on a double steal initiated by Brittany Black(HayMarket, VA) after a four pitch walk.  A groudout ended the inning.  With no runs crossing the plate in the 2nd inning,  Chipola scored 1 in the third to make the score 3-0.  In the 4th inning the Lady Indians scoreed 4 runs on 4 hits and one Gordon error.  Gordon scored 2 runs in the top of the fifth after getting 3 hits and one Chipola error.  Chipola answered back in the bottom of the fifth with 3 runs to end the game by mercy rule 10-2.  Chipola ended with 11 hits.  Black was the winning pitcher going 5 innings and giving up 1 earned run.

 

The second game started much like the first game ended, with hits.   Chipola pounded out 15 hits against Stanly to win 9-1 in a mercy rule.  Skylar Davis(Chipley) got the win throwing 4 innings and not allowing a hit.  Liz Krauser(Cottondale) came in for the fifth inning and gave up a unearned run due to 2 Chipola errors and one Stanly hit.  During the inning, Haley Adkison(Vernon) held on to a throw from Hewett at the plate to stop another run from scoring.  The Lady Indians ended pool play with a perfect 5-0 record to secure the #1 seed for the gold bracket. 

 

In the first game of the bracket, and third game of the day, Chipola played Walter State.  Due to some controversy from Wallace Hanceville, Chipola would have to play another #1 seed Walter State.  The game was ended in the 5th by mercy rule 8-0.  The Lady Indians scored 2 runs in all four innings they batted, highlighted by two 2 run homeruns by Bliss and a total of 13 hits from Chipola.  Emma Stevenson(Harrisburg, NC) only allowed 2 hits and struckout 9 over 5 innings of work.

 

With the 3 wins today Chipola has increased their win streak to 16 games and overall record to 17-3.  The Indians will play Middle Georgia at 11:00 cst in the semifinals.  A win will put the Indians in the championship game at 1:30.  All scores and stats can be found on www.chipolaathletics.com
